Living Room Artwork

Recently, the lack of artwork hanging in our home has been getting to me! I am longing to finally have some pretty pieces up, and I've got B on board, as I have decided to go the DIY route. The one spot that bothers me the most is just to the left of the couch (if you're looking at it), between the built in bookcase and the pass through... see it below with a drastically undersized frame hung (which I have since removed as it clearly looked ridiculous).

Our plan was to use painters tape to find the perfect size of artwork that I want to hang here. So exactly is it that I plan to hang there? A personal piece of artwork that I plan to paint myself... and this is my inspiration...

I originally posted about this piece back in October after spotting it over on Oh Happy Day! I'm loving the way it looks and think that doing something similar with some grey's, white's and yellow's would be fantastic... maybe some blue, as well? I have some options to move forward with creating my artwork that I'll get to later, but first, I need your help...

When I got home from work last night, B grabbed some painters tape and we taped out an area that we thought would be good for the canvas, and this is what we came up with...

Don't you just love crappy quality photos because of the lack of daylight? Seriously - these were taken at 7pm... just frustrating (okay, I could also adjust the white balance on my camera... I'm just too lazy).

Of course, the final canvas may be a bit larger or smaller, depending on what size canvas I can find. What I want your help with is deciding if we've got the size right (roughly), and do we have it hanging in the right spot?

I didn't want it to line up directly with either the top of the pass through or the top of the bookcase, and I wasn't too sure if it should go much lower. What do you think - have we got the size about right? Should it go lower? Maybe just something longer? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  2. oh my gosh, i can't wait to see what you do and how you pull it all together. before you showed your taped off area, i was thinking of a longer piece. maybe a little skinnier and longer, but i agree with the whole not lining up with the opening part. it looks great as is, from what i can tell, if you think making it a little longer would match it to the opening too much i would just leave it.

  3. When hanging any kind of artwork, it's usually best to hang it so that the center of it is in your direct line of sight. It looks like yours is right about there, so you're good to go! I like the size...anything longer might be too similar to the height of the pass-through.

  4. My nana always says to hang "at the eyeline of the lady of the house". Art hung too high is one of my pet peeves.

I think it's looking great! I wouldn't go any bigger or else you lose the wall and it might look a bit crowded.

  5. Looks really great, Kerry :) You don't want the piece too high like Christine mentioned because us ladies are a bit shorter! I can't wait to see what you come up with. Love your couch too!! xo

  7. It's a little hard to tell in the photo, because it's cropped so tight - it's hard to tell the proportion vs the rest of the room. Still I'd like to see it a little narrower. I feel like it's crowding the edge of the pass through a bit.

  8. Looks great! a little narrower might be a good call, but not too narrow. I'm excited to see how it turns out -- i feel like this is one of those "easy" things they tell you to do in magazines and I've always wondered how "easy" it is!

  11. That is so much fun! I once painted my own canvas of an antique chandelier- it turned out great! I think I saw this photo on your blog way back and admired it! I would make it just a tad bit smaller - otherewise it looks fab! My boyfriend and I have always wanted to paint a canvas together- whether B helps or not- this will have great meaning later on! xo

  12. The space you have chosen is a bit awkward as it is a strip of wall next to an open breakfast bar. However, with the side table and chunky furniture nearby it should work... but I think you may want to go smaller. The blocked out area is a bit large. There is a really good post on how to choose spaces, right proportion, height, etc. here - http://yourdecoratinghotline.com/accessorize-with-a-plan-part-1/
