Class #5

It's hard to believe that I am already starting my fifth class towards earning my certificate in interior decorating. I only started the program in April of 2010, and I'm moving full steam ahead with only three classes left to complete (including the one I am currently enrolled in).

Last night was my first night of my business practices class, and I am so looking forward to it. Through the course we will work on putting together our own business, as well as coming to better understand basic business practices as a decorator, including a lot of the legal know-how.

Our very first assignment is to put together a mission and vision statement for our business. I've started myself to brainstorm what I'd like my business to be about, my focus, what I'd like my focus to be and what I want to be about. But, I also need your help my dear readers and friends!

I need to know what you think about me! What image have I conveyed of myself, even just through this little ol' blog? If you've met me - even better! This could be a dangerous thing for me to throw out there, but I'd love your input, and I'm sure it will be interesting to hear the different ways you've come to view me through my blogging and possibly our personal interactions!

I can't wait to share the process of me putting together a business with you! Should be an interesting journey!

  1. So cool that you took the plunge and are studying what you love! I'm thinking I might like to take a few courses as well. Where are you studying?
We haven't met in person, but I really like your blog and online personality. You are friendly, approachable, supportive and kind. Your approach to decorating is simple and elegant and you always work on things within a budget... which I think is really important, since not every client is going to be 'high end'.
Good luck with your course, I'm looking forward to reading about it!

  2. I started my sales and business pratices course at Seneca last night. We talked about finding your niche and figuring out what you specialize in. Your lucky only to have 3 left. My program has 12 courses and I have 6 left.

  3. besides a great aesthetic you are very approachable. It is a great quality, as many home owners feel intimidated by the big word "designer". I think you will do great :) good luck with school :)

  4. Kerry - I only met you briefly at the Design Bloggers Meet up in June but you are very approachable in person and in reading your blog you are very resourceful and use what you have on hand in unique ways.
I'm almost mid-way through the decorating program at Seneca but there are 12 courses so I've got a bit to go!

  7. I think you come across as kind, sweet and approachable, which will definitely be a strength when attracting and working with clients. I agree with others who've said that you're resourceful, and I think the work you've done in your house shows a nice combination of beautiful, but still functional designs - another great strength, since most people want their homes to look beautiful, but still need the design to "work" for everyday life. Good luck - I can't wait to hear what you come up with :)

  8. You have got to be the friendliest person I know on the blogosphere! You were one of the first commenters and regular reader that wasn't a friend or relative we had. It didn't seem to matter to you that we were this tiny little blog, appearing out of nowhere and you had a couple years and hundreds of posts, followers, and comments behind you. You are accepting and open and, well... the other commenters are right: complete approachable.

Based on you're blog, you seem to also never sleep! Honestly, I don't know how you do it... brand new baby and you're STILL working on projects! I remember one post, your head board upholstery project maybe? where you're wielding a staple gun and batting almost 9 months pregnant. Blew me away. Energetic indeed, inspiring, strong!

Seriously. You're one of the best home improvement/decorating/blogging role models out there. Thanks for being you and have fun in those classes!

  9. So since I'm both a blog reader and I've met you in person, I'll have to give you the cold hard truth... you are sweet, open, personable and talented. There is also a side to you (and this will serve you will in business) that is practical, determined, and realistic. I think you have excellent time-management skills and are able to marry form and function very well.

In terms of a niche, I think what comes through on your blog and in person is "accessible design". Your projects don't have exhorbitant budgets nor is the DIY aspect totally daunting. As a designer, I think you would have a knack for translating basic wants and needs into stylish, budget conscious and livable designs.

    Hope that helps!

  11. Kerry, I know we've never met but I like to think I've gotten to know you through this internetland and I can say you are going to be amazing at whatever you do. You are so sweet and personable and I think the fact that we've never met just proves those skills even more. Your clients will love you :)

You tackle every project with ambition and practicality. Nobody crosses things off the to-do list like you guys!
