Another Look - Living Room Progress

Slowly this house is coming together. A lot slower than we had hoped, but as my post on Monday indicated, we are also taking in some time to soak in our beautiful new surroundings. No use keeping ourselves locked in the house all of the time when we are living in such a gorgeous part of the country. Thankfully, Halle has finally decided that she will nap in her crib on her own (usually for 1 hour plus!), so it gives me the time that I need to accomplish things. Recently, I've been trying to focus my energy on unpacking the boxes in the living room and getting things into the shelves of our new HEMNES media centre. Here's where we are now...

May 2, 2012

Since I last posted, I've managed to more or less keep that stupid black chair from migrating closer to the couch, unpacked most of the books and accessories from the boxes in the corner and pull out our throw cushions and blankets. They've all added a bit more colour and helped to make the room feel more like home... but we're a long way from finished.

I need to go through our boxes and boxes of art and decide if there is anything we like that will work in this room to the right of our entertainment area. I also have something like this picture below in the back of my mind (I'm always looking for ways to incorporate a map or maps into our home).

We also need to decide what to do with the receiver that B has so kindly placed in one of the shelves over the television. Suggestions?

May 2, 2012

The shelves will also need some tweaking. For the time being I was just too focused on clearing out boxes, so I've done what I can with them for now. A few more books and a ton of magazines still to come out. I'll figure it all out in time. I'm just glad that we purchased one side of the unit with glass doors - it will keep small fingers from getting at things that they shouldn't be touching!

May 2, 2012

Things we still need to purchase? Definitely a never cover for the black chair. We could go beige, but I've seen someone around here selling a brand new blue and white striped cover (thin stripes) for the chair on craigslist. They are asking a decent price but something is keeping me from pulling the trigger. We also need an area rug, which is the next big purchase on our list. We've been to both the HomeSense stores near by, as well as Home Depot, the Urban Barn outlet... and any other place we pass that may sell rugs. We just haven't found anything we love yet. Where do you usually shop for area rugs (and have success)?.

In an ideal world I would love to get a nice sofa table behind our couch as well... but that's kind of a low priority at the moment.

That last photo also gives you a small glimpse of some of the baby proofing we've been having to do. Outlets are covered, and those black strips in front of the fire place our foam strips. Halle has taken to climbing on everything, so hopefully these will protect her little melon from those sharp edges.

So there you have it - a small glimpse at what the new place is shaping up to be so far! Halle's room should be the next space you get a look at. It's the other room I've been focusing my energy on - we just need to get some stuff up on the walls next. Our room... well, it's basically a king bed (without a headboard... or bedskirt on yet), and an area rug that we found at HomeSense. Still on the hunt for the right dresser... so it's still loaded with boxes and suitcases. We'll see what we can accomplish over the weekend though!

The momentum is here though - so more updates next week!

We All Love Her...

Sarah Richardson. I know you all do, so don't pretend like you don't. Her designs are fabulous, and I'm pretty sure most of us would be happy to have her design a room in our home. Well, here's your chance (GTA readers - sorry everyone else)!

Sarah is currently casting for Season 2 of Sarah 101! To find out more, you can head on over here! For those of you who have been living under a rock, you can head on over here to see all of the rooms that Sarah transformed into stunning spaces during Season 1!

Would love to hear if any of my readers responded to the casting call and if they made it. So very exciting - and good luck to those that are submitting their spaces!

The Boys & Bloggers

Yesterday was the day - I spent it hanging out in downtown Toronto with Steven & Chris and a bunch of fantastic Canadian (mostly Toronto / GTA) Bloggers. It was INCREDIBLE! Let's start from the beginning, shall we?

I was up (not so bright) and early to head downtown and meet a few lovely ladies (and my Mom!) for breakfast...

I enjoyed the company of Sharon, Shannon, Brittany and Jen over breakfast! It was a great opportunity for all of us to chat more before heading off to the taping. It was good because it all seemed to go so quickly once we arrived!

From the beginning everything went well. Once we arrived at the CBC studios, we didn't have to wait long in line before they started getting us ready to head into the studio. Once we were upstairs and waiting to walk into the studio (in a beautiful room FULL of the boys own furniture!), there were members of the Steven & Chris team walking around, taking photos of us bloggers & tweeting them! Awesome!

We really didn't have to wait long, but long enough that some of us got to chat and get some more photos. From there, they moved us quickly into the studio where they had great music playing to get us all pumped up. They didn't spend a lot of time reading off rules and make us do silly head nods and the rest, just some clapping and cheering, which really just got us excited!

Cameras and phones were all welcome in between shooting, so we had them all out right away. We were also sitting pretty... surrounded by so many lovely ladies...

ShannonJen were in front of us...
MY NYC trip pals VanessaChristine (& Sarah... sadly not pictured) were right behind us
...and I had the pleasure of sitting next to the lovely Janice! Was like being at the show with an old friend!
The boys jumped right into the show when they came out, announcing that they had an audience full of lifestyle bloggers. It was apparent that the audience appreciated this announcement.

Overall, I was really happy with the segments they covered. Starting with some viewer questions (design related), and then onto some of Steven's DIY projects... which was where they announced we were each taking home a gallon of Para Paint (and one lucky audience member would take home TEN gallons... oh yea!... not me though).

Guest chef was Rodney Bowers (who you'd know from the last season of Marriage Under Construction). He made a fantastic Pulled Pork... which we enjoyed afterwards in the lobby! A seriously INCREDIBLE lunch, you'll want to watch for this recipe! He's so funny, and who doesn't love a local chef doing his thing?

Celebrity guest was Jenny McCarthy talking about her new book... and some odd personal tidbits. You'll have to watch (this Friday the 22nd) to hear more about those. They rounded out the show nicely with a quick pina colada recipe. I think that they really covered all bases for their audience of lifestyle bloggers & the general consensus was people were really happy!

What I loved most? How personable the boys were with all of us. Talking to us constantly and inviting us to talk out if they asked questions to the audience. In between shooting segments, they had no problem stepping forward for pictures and to thank us all for coming out to the show...

A little blurry, but I think everyone will agree that this perfectly captures the boys and their personalities! They are so charming and warm and friendly - they actually make you feel so welcome and not just like a bunch of people sitting in a TV studio. Plus, they are hilarious. There were numerous times we all busted up during the show with genuine laughter (grey vinyl & dry erase markers anyone?).

They also had no problem mingling and hanging around with all of us after the taping. As we all enjoyed the pulled pork, the boys, along with Rodney (AND George Stroumboulopoulos) all hung around mingling, chatting and taking pictures with us... but that still wasn't the end. Once we all finished up, we headed back into the studio where we had the chance to meet the boys individually and get photos taken...

I also snuck a little hug from Chris - haha - they were SO SWEET!
The Q&A that happened afterwards was great. The boys answered questions about their career, their brand, inspiration, blogs, beauty products, fashion, and even a few question about their personal lives. They really were so open to the questions and answered so truthfully.

Afterwards we took the time to pick up some great items to giveaway to our wonderful blog readers (to come later this week!), and more chances for photos!

Liz, ShannonTara, me, Jennifer
To sum it up... I must say that I really enjoyed it. The boys and their production team did a fantastic job hosting us, and I would gladly go back to their show again. I think it helped that there is a serious sense of friendship amongst the Toronto bloggers, so it was like a reunion (a room full of strangers... that I already know.. right ladies?).

After such a great day, I can say I am even more sad that I won't be able to make the blogger meet-up on November 20th... but I am looking forward to having the chance to meet up with my blog friends again in the future!

*Edit: In my haste I managed to forget to post about how wonderful it was to meet Tania, Staci and Lindsay as well! (You can spy Lindsay and her lovely Mom in the background of my last photo checking out the set... which she posted about here!) I so hope I didn't miss anyone else... but if I did, it's not that I didn't absolutely love meeting you... it's just that I'm so overwhelmed with all of the wonderful people and things we saw yesterday!

For Steven and Chris

Today is the day! I'm off to the CBC Studios here in Toronto with a bunch of other great bloggers from these parts to check out a taping of Steven and Chris, followed by a lunch and Q&A with the boys! I'm so looking forward to this!

For those of you who are not familiar, Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman are a great Canadian Duo who first broke out in 2001 with their show "Designer Guys". This was one of the first design shows I really got into watching with my Mom and we loved watching the boys transform rooms into beautiful, inspired spaces. In 2003, they launched their second television show "Design Rivals", and in 2005 came out with "So Chic with Steven and Chris".

Today the boys have their own line of furniture, decorative accessories, linen, lighting and wines. YES, WINE! Just this past summer Steven & Chris paired with Reif Estates in the Niagara Region to have their own line of "Trend Wines" created. You can find their un-oaked Chardonnay-Pinot Grigio and Merlot-Cabernet at over 100 LCBO's across Ontario now. I'm thinking I'm going to have to run out and pick some up to try for myself!

Today, they entertain Canadian audiences everyday on CBC with their lifestyle talk show Steven & Chris, and I was so thrilled when I was contacted to be a part of their audience today. I'm looking forward to seeing what they have in store content wise, as well as the chance to meet so many great bloggers from this area! I'll fill you all in a little later this week on how today's experience goes.

For now, I'll leave you with a few of the boys transformations from their Designer Guys days.

Casting Call Notice

The other day I received an email from Jennifer, a TV producer, casting for a new TV show that will be on the W Network. They are looking for "wacky, dynamic and fun extended families" with 3 seperate households that all need a little renovation help.

It sounds like a fun show and I was very happy to hear from Jennifer... I have sent my own submission for our family to be considered as partcipants! (I'll let you know how it goes). If you think you'd like to be on the show, please send me an email and I can forward along the details sent by Jennifer. Be sure to let me know if you're chosen! Would love to see some of my readers on TV!
