Opportunity Arises...

I know there has been a lot of silence around here, and I've been alluding to a lot happening that has kept us away from blogging (aside from the computer incident, which we have finally rectified!). Well, the time has finally come for me to spill the beans...

B and I have always been adventure seekers. We love seeing new places, travelling, having new experiences and meeting new people. We always intended to travel the world more widely together before starting a family, but this past summer we were blessed with Halle and really we wouldn't change a thing. That being said, sometimes an opportunity arises that you just can't turn down.

life

In January, B started a new job with a new company. He had hoped that with this move he would've gone from Coordinator to Manager, but that was not to be. However, he was happy with his new employers, the people he worked with and the overall good feeling he got from going to work. Things seemed to be on the up for us. Then within a few weeks of starting, something even better happened. B had been working on a job site in the downtown core, learning the ropes of his new company, when his reporting manager came out to take him for lunch and discuss his next move. He was given the option of working in the east end of the city as a Coordinator, OR..... heading out west to beautiful British Columbia to work as a Project Manager.

BritishColumbia

When B first brought up the opportunity to me, I was excited... and a little nervous. What a great opportunity for our tiny family. B and I had always discussed moving away somewhere together, but the chance had never really presented itself. Suddenly, there it was, being handed right to us. I spent that afternoon writing down pros and cons - one the biggest cons for me would be leaving this tiny house that we have turned into our family home. The first place B and I bought together, the home we first brought Harley to when we adopted him in December 2009, the home we have so lovingly renovated to make it exactly what we want, and the home our tiny Halle girl first came home to. In two and a half years, we have created so many fabulous memories in this tiny home and part of me realized that if we were to leave, it would be a lot harder than I had ever anticipated.

I know in the end a home is strictly just bricks and mortar, and what truly matters is that the three of us and our two pups are always together. But I will miss hearing the streetcar whoosh by outside, being a two minute walk from the lake, watching this once hurting neighbourhood evolve and revive itself. I'll miss sunny summer days of exploring Toronto with B, and of course I will miss being so close to family and friends who have been here my whole life. I know B has already made these sacrifices and left everything he knew to come and be with me... if he can do it, I can do it too. It's exactly the adventure we've been craving - an opportunity to finally explore the west coast of this beautiful country... as well as our neighbours to the south. I'm also pretty excited to have a brand new place to decorate... even if we won't be able to renovate.

At this point, we aren't sure if we will rent or sell our home, we really have to think this over. Both have pros and cons, but regardless, it's time to start paring down our stuff in preparation for packing up our lives here. So keep an eye out and head on over to like First Time Fancy on facebook, as I'll have an ongoing "Blogarage Sale" going on over there, selling off items that we hope to part with.

As I mentioned last week, I'm also looking for some guest bloggers to help me out over this next month as we make our big changes! If you're interested please shoot me an email! I already have a couple lovely bloggers who have offered their assistance and I couldn't be any happier to have them!

Look out West Coast! We're heading your way!

  8. How exciting for you all - yes, big moves can be daunting (I've managed to pull off 3 different international moves over the past decade), but they also bring so many new adventures and experiences that they can be worth all of the upheaval, and being away from close family/friends. In the days of skype, distance is really no longer insurmountable in terms of maintaining those connections.

So, enjoy the adventures the coming months will bring - I'm looking forward to reading all about your BC life!

  18. Congrats on B's new job and your new adventure! I did the pros/cons list before we headed out to Vancouver for 4 years for my husband's job. It was such an amazing experience and my daughter spent the first year of her life out there. It's a great place to raise kids - lots to do! Excited to find out where you will be living. We lived in Kits (a 15 minute walk to the beach) and then bought a house in North Van. So exciting!

  22. How exciting! Big changes make a person/family nimble and while it is difficult to leave everything that feels so good and you have worked so hard at behind, opportunity awaits! Best of luck to all of you on this journey!

  23. Oh my goodness!! Congratulations, Kerry. That's a very big move, but it's such a great quality of life out there. You are going to love being immersed in the mountains and lakes, especially with Halle and your pups. We've moved seven times with the kids, and more than anything it's made me realize my "home" is these very special people I get to share my life with, not any particular house. If you need agues post, I'm in - really :)

  24. I'm so excited for you! How wonderful!!! I absolutely understand the need to travel and explore - we have it in us as well. Even though leaving behind a home you've poured your heart and soul into is difficult, there's so much out there to experience and there's always another place to call home. I'm thrilled for you all!!!

  25. Congratulations! I'm trying to find a way we can get to BC as well. Can't wait to follow along on your adventure.
