Nursery Inspiration

We're still quite a few weeks away (at least) from finding out the gender of our little bundle of joy, but this hasn't stopped me from hunting down some lovely inspiration for our nursery to be! The space we will be using is currently used as our bedroom... here's a few photos of the space from when we first moved in, and a peak at what it looks like at the moment...

It's a decent size space for a little peanut, and will definitely seem a lot bigger once our queen size bed and large dresser are out.

We've already got a pretty polka dotted and stripped, brown and white bedding. I know I want some bright colours to go with it, but I haven't settled on a final choice yet (and probably won't until well after we know the gender. Below are a few nursery's I came across during my searches. I set each aside in my inspiration file for different reasons; colour, style, certain aspects...

At this point, who know's where I'll end up... I have so many ideas, and I'm so excited to get to decorate this new space in our home.

So here's the question I pose to you - what colour schemes (including brown) do you like for boys and girls. I'm always open to new suggestions, and I'm sure that some of you will offer up ideas I haven't yet considered.... Thoughts?

  1. Oh there's nothing more fun than decorating a nursery- I can't wait to see what you come up with. As for colour schemes...I love brown, pale turquoise and a chartreuse/yellow for boys (go figure- that's what my son's nursery is;) For the girls, I like brown with lavender/violet. xo

  3. Thanks for posting. We too are planning a nursery but in our case it's for two! I really like the first photo. The second (Jenna Lyon's I believe) is great with the painted ceiling but a little dark for a baby in my opinion. I think whatever colours you go for the important thing is not to make it too theme-y ... those rooms give me headaches! Great starting point with the sheets!

  4. This is so exciting Kerry! I think that room is going to be so perfect for the nursery! In terms of your inspiration photos, I love all of them! I also have that one with the yellow and white striped ceiling, the Sarah Richardson one and the one with the chaise. As for colour schemes, I am with Christine - I like either robin's egg blue or pale turquoise for boys. As for girls, I like brown with purples and pinks. I have a lot of cute kids rooms on my Pinterest board - http://pinterest.com/ShannonF/kids-stuff/

  5. Thanks everyone! :)

@Christine - B and I were both talking about a plae turquoise for a boys room, and I love the idea for adding chartreuse / yellow! Thanks for that!

@Calmly Chatotic... I am so with you! nothing too themey! I can't handle themey haha!

@Shannon - thanks so much, I will definitely be taking a look at your Pinterest board! :)

  6. What a lucky baby stealing the master bedroom, where are you guys going to sleep!?

I love the colour palette of the first room, I'm also a fan of the neutral nursery with pops of any colour! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

  7. I am out of the loop....How did I miss that you are pregnant?? That is such amazing news!

As for nursery colours...I love tone on tone blues for boys and full on pink for girls. I did not know what I was having either time, so I picked the sweetest bedding I could find and then pulled colours and created art from that. It is one of the most fun rooms you will ever decorate!

  8. I'm not sure whether this is widely known or not, but colour psychology says that yellow makes babies cry. I love Jenna Lyons' room with the yellow stripes on the ceiling, but for a baby lying on its back it might not be the best colour choice.

  9. I love the colour scheme of the 1st and 3rd pics as they are very neutral and can go either way!

  10. So much fun! For both sexes, I'm drawn to pale greys. Mix it with orange for boys or soft lilacs for girls. Both work with brown too!

  11. That first option was something I have bookmarked for if I ever have a girl. I've had it set aside since we found out we were expecting Jack :)

    For girls I love: teal+yellow and lavender+grey
For boys I love: teal+orange and olive green+brown

  13. Ah one of my favorite design topics, nurseries are so fun!

For girls right now I am loving dark purple walls, not an overly girly purple but a more modern, hints of gray purple. Maybe some pink accents to make it a little girly :)

For boys I love a bright grass green, though I am still so naturally drawn to the third picture you posted with the Ikea leaf curtains. Maybe because I have those curtains? But I also love the letters on the little ledge up there!
